Something to think about

11/24/2019

This is a prayer that I heard about and wanted to find out what it stated. You can find it at: https://westpoint.edu/about/chaplain/cadet-prayer

Colonel Clayton E. Wheat wrote this prayer when he was the Chaplain there (1918-1926).

This is a prayer that, from what I heard, was for the cadets at West Point Military Academy to learn before they graduated prior to 1972. I trust the person who stated it; however, I could find no proof on the internet about that. However, I do know that this is a prayer that with a few minor changes is one that all Christians should know and follow.

The changes to make so it would be for us civilians is in the next to last sentence. They are, to change the word “Corps” to “Lord Jesus Christ” and the words “West Point” to “Jesus.”

If this strikes your curiosity then go to this website and read it for yourself.

Let not your heart be troubled

11/17/2019

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1 (KJV)

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 (KJV)

5  Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
8  Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
22  Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? John 14:5, 8, 22 (KJV)

While reading my Sunday School lessen text several things stood out to me:

  1. Verses 1 & 27 both tell us to NOT let our hearts be troubled.
  2. The disciples asked Jesus questions
    1. Thomas – verse 5, was doubting his knowledge not Jesus’ knowledge or teaching.
    2. Philip – verse 8, asked to be shown the Father and he would be happy or satisfied.
    3. Judas (not Iscariot) – verse 22, was wondering why Jesus was making his mission to earth know just to a few men and not the world.
  3. Jesus was still teaching and not upset because of their questions

It seems to me that the modern world is causing many Christians to be troubled in their heart about many different things. Such as the military actions taking place all around the world and how it seems that more and more of our religious freedoms are being taken away.

In the natural, it is easy and normal to be troubled about the state of our lives, our family, our health, our church and many other things. Therefore, verses 1 and 27, are telling us to go against our human nature and not let these troubles bother us. Jesus many times in the New Testament tells us to put our faith, our trust, in Him and to cast our burdens on His shoulders. When we do this, our hearts will not be troubled and we will have peace in our hearts.

To me this chapter is showing us that we are not to be troubled or worried and that Jesus will not get mad at us if we ask questions. No one can convince me that they have not had questions about God, their soul, their trial or testing that they are facing.

Therefore, when you get to a place that life is causing your soul or heart to be troubled, feel free to ask questions of Jesus. He will not get upset as long as you are sincerely searching for His will in your life.

Remember our Veterans and their families

11/10/2019

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a day to remember and be thankful for all the Veterans in our lives. I recently ran across an article I wrote for a church bulletin in 2011 and felt like putting it out there for you.

For A Memorial

Esther 9:28 (KJV)
And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.

The word “memorial” is found thirty-three times in the King James Version of the Bible. It talks about setting things aside, so that when you go by them you will remember what happened there. Just like America has the Historical Markers so the Bible tells of markers that denote special events in the Bible. Just so people will remember what happened, where and when it happened.

Religion has set aside days to remember some such as: Easter, All Saints Day and Good Friday. Schools have their Homecoming for students to remember the previous classes. In America the government has set aside days to remember things like: Geek Day, April Fool’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Pearl Harbor Day, and many other days, in fact so many days that some days during the year is for more than one remembrance. One of the more important days is Memorial Day, the day to remember all of the servicemen and women who fought for our freedoms.

Since the first “white” man set foot in what we call America they have been at odds with someone about protecting their freedom. From the Indians – their freedom to live on the land; from the British – their freedom to decide who governs them and who they should worship; from the World – the right to be free. Now days, some of the citizens have decided to fight our own government for some of the freedoms that have been taken away from us.

Most important, from the days when George Washington led the troops at Valley Forge, down through Gettysburg to Iwo Jima to Vietnam to Afghanistan and all the other places that American blood has split so that people can have more freedom than they had. Our soldiers have willingly, more than not, signed up to protect us. Have ou prayed for them today? Yesterday? The day before? Every day? We need to support our troops and the people who provide support for them. They are very valuable to your lifestyle.

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN, who serves under the Flag,

And most important of all, it is GOD who protects the VETERANS.

Precious Heavenly Father, thank you for all the volunteers that serve in our military and thank you for their leaders who follow you. Please keep your hand on each one and send someone to lead them to YOU LORD. We also ask that you watch over their family that they have at home waiting for you. Amen.

All of Jesus and none of Me

10/20/2019

John 3:25-36, John the Baptist is giving one of if not his last speech to the people before his imprisonment. During his speech he used a sentence that we must all take to heart. Moreover, If we forget these words, we run the risk of losing our salvation.

30  He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 (KJV)

When we are born we have a human outlook on life, a self-centered human outlook; me, my wants, my needs and my desires. To put it in terms I have heard many times, “what is in it for me.” Where it is strongest is where you strive for more. In the financial sense it is called being “money hungry.” In the area of self-esteem it could be called being a “glory seeker.”

We need to take that “human outlook” and turn it into a “Heaven outlook” where we place our wants, needs and desires into what does God want me to do.

This reminds me of the song by Theodore Monod:

None of Self and All of Thee.

Oh, the bitter pain and sorrow that a time could ever be, when I proudly said to Jesus, “All of self, and none of Thee.”

All of self, and none of Thee,
All of self, and none of Thee,
When I proudly said to Jesus,
“All of self, and none of Thee.”

Yet He found me; I beheld Him bleeding on th’ accursed tree, and my wistful heart said faintly, “Some of self, and some of Thee.”

Some of self, and some of Thee,
Some of self, and some of Thee,
And my wistful heart said faintly,
“Some of self, and some of Thee.”

Day by day His tender mercy, healing, helping, full and free, brought me lower while I whispered, “Less of self, and more of Thee.”

Less of self, and more of Thee,
Less of self, and more or Thee,
Brought me lower while I whispered,
“Less of self, and more of Thee.”

Higher than the highest heaven, deeper than the deepest sea, Lord, Thy love at last has conquered: “None of self, and all of Thee.”

None of self, and all of Thee,
None of self, and all of Thee,
Lord, Thy love at last has conquered:
“None of self, and all of Thee.”

You Shall Receive Power

10/14/2019

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 (KJV)

Father, we thank You for Your unlimited power working in us through the Holy Spirit. Through Your supernatural power, we are equipped to be a witness. Your Word declares that we are to be filled with the Holy Spirit; therefore, we ask You to fill us afresh. We will no longer be restricted by fear, anxiety, or sin; we stand boldly in faith as a witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have explosive power on the inside of us. We release this dynamic power to affect change and lasting transformation in every area of our life. We break the power of sickness through the blood of Jesus and the Word of God, and we neutralize every attack of the enemy in our physical body. We stand victorious as an ambassador of the kingdom of God on earth. Thank You for our freedom. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen!
