15. He commands.
Acts 16:6
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia.
One very important work of the Holy Ghost is to speak to our hearts and tell us what He desires us to do, or what He would not have us to do. If we will be obedient to his voice, we will avoid much of the trouble the devil tries to put upon us. Obedience is better than sacrifice. Why should we sacrifice ourselves to Satan, when by obedience we can win the victory?
16. He is susceptible to personal treatment.
Acts 5:3
But Peter said, Ananias why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Surprise! Surprise! Did you know that you can lie to the Holy Ghost? Well, you can, not that you can get away with it, but you can lie to the Holy Ghost. Ananias and his wife thought they were lying to Peter, but they were wrong. We need to be careful lest we be found guilty of the same thing. Always be truthful, for the truth will set you free. The Lord knows the thoughts and the intents of our hearts, so why do we think we can get away with lying to the Holy Ghost or God?
17. He can be resisted.
Acts 7:51
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
To resist the Holy Ghost is as simple as saying “no” when the Holy Ghost deals with your heart. Sinners resist the Holy Ghost when God’s spirit deals with them to repent and they say “no,” “not now,” or “at a more convenient time.” We resist the Holy Ghost when He tells us to go and pray for someone, and we won’t go. We resist the Holy Ghost when He tells us to put a certain amount in the offering, and we reason that we can’t afford it. When we are moved upon by God to do or say something and we refuse, then we resist the Holy Ghost.
(Next week we will read about how the Holy Ghost can be blasphemed.
