The Personality of the Holy Ghost
This membership of the Holy Ghost in the Holy Trinity is proof of the personality of the Holy Ghost. We too often think of the Holy Ghost as either the spirit of God or Jesus without His own personality. We must begin to think of the Holy Ghost as a person. He is not the spirit of God or Jesus. He has His own mind and feelings. Additional proof of the Holy Ghost’s personality is found in his manifested attributes of personality. What does it take to be considered a person? What does the Word say that the Holy Ghost does in His work for God?
The following scripture tells of His work and His personality, character, and demeanor.
1. He strives with sinners.
Genesis 6:3
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Here is a truth most people neglect; one many people don’t even know. Ministers never teach it. The fact is: God’s spirit will not always strive with man. Now’s a good time to talk about God’s spirit; God has a spirit just the same as we have. We sometimes think of the Holy Ghost as the spirit of God, but we’re wrong, for the Holy Ghost is His own person with His own spirit. Because the Godhead is so unified in working together, it’s very hard sometimes to see the difference between their personalities. Remember that the scripture teaches that the Holy Ghost would not come till Jesus went back to heaven. Before that time, the Holy Ghost worked in the background. After Jesus returned to sit at the right hand of God, then and only then did the Holy Ghost come to the forefront. Now, the Holy Ghost has come to be our comforter, to strive with sinners, and to bring conviction to the world. Genesis 6:3 tells us that man can—and sometimes does—sin away his days of grace. He reaches a place where God’s spirit no longer deals with him. How long will God strive with a person? Only God knows how long He will work with a person to get them to come to salvation. There comes a time when God will turn them over to a reprobate mind.
Genesis 6:3
And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
Romans 1:28
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
(Next week we will read about how the Holy Ghost reaches the heart.
